CHAPTER TWELVE

When Zach arrived back to the hotel room, I was in the bed with the covers up to my neck and watching an old foreign film, shivering as if cold.

“Are you sick?” he asked.

“No, you will not believe what happened. It was so awful.”

“Now you have me worried. What happened?” he said as he threw his papers and files on the desk. Zach came and sat on the edge of the bed near me.

I told him the long version of my experiences from that day since he had left early in the morning. It ended with the man speaking to me behind my back as I imitated the manner in which he spoke.

“Oh, Jeni. I have no idea what to think. Another man with the same hat, and this time, a second man who may have threatened you, but you have no idea what he looked like or even if he was the man you saw earlier. Maybe you heard wrong.”

“I knew you were going to say that!”

“I’m sorry, but it seems so crazy.”

“I’m not crazy!”

“Okay, let’s be logical. How do you know he spoke like a Russian?”

I reminded Zach of our trip to Sunny Beach, Bulgaria, on the coast of the Black Sea that is south of Romania. We had stayed in a large apartment complex where everyone was from the Ukraine or Russia, and according to the desk clerk, we were the first Americans they had ever seen. We discovered that, in August, Sunny Beach was the summer home of thousands of half-naked and pot-bellied Russian vacationers. It was eye-opening. Some of the men were so large that you could not even see the tiny black bathing suit that they wore under their tanned stomachs.

Going nude had no relation to whether your body deserved to be seen by anyone other than your mate. We looked like conservative aliens, me in my black one-piece and Zach in his American-style swimsuit, and they looked like overboiled extra-large shrimp.

“I listened to them all week long. And really, he looked Russian now that I think about it … even his clothes. He had those odd, expensive shoes I saw on the men at Sunny Beach.”

“You were watching Russian Today on TV this morning and complaining about the ridiculous stuff that they were spewing out about the United States. I bet that put it in your head.” With that, he tapped my forehead, which predictably infuriated me.

“No, I promise, it is the man. You will see that I’m right, and you’re going to be … I don’t know what, but I can tell you that I’m not in the mood to eat anywhere right now.” By then, my eyes were beginning to show the signs of a tear or two, and my face was turning red.

“Okay, maybe I’m just tired after a long day, and you’re right. I hope they’ll just go away since we have to get out of this hotel at some point.” I knew Zach was still not convinced,
